What is a generative engine optimization audit?

Question

Accepted Answer

Generative engine optimization (GEO) audits examine how AI-powered search platforms understand, retrieve, and reference your website content. While traditional SEO audits focus on rankings, backlinks, and organic visibility, GEO audits also look at whether AI systems can accurately identify your business, understand your expertise, and use your content when generating answers. The process involves reviewing how your brand appears in AI-generated responses, checking whether important pages contain clear and consistent information, and identifying technical issues that make your content difficult to interpret. This may include evaluating structured data, internal linking, factual consistency, and how effectively your pages answer relevant questions. The objective is to make your website easier for AI systems to understand and reference. Although no audit can guarantee citations or recommendations, identifying these gaps can improve your content’s accessibility and usefulness across emerging AI-driven search experiences.
